  • Italy, early nineteenth century
  • The Waterfalls at Tivoli
  • Gouache over pencil, heightened with gum arabic, on swanskin
  • dated and inscribed on the old mount: 1830 / Bigatti
  • 131 × 214 mm

The view in the centre of the sheet shows the so-called Cascatelle Grandi of Tivoli, formerly one of the three most spectacular waterfalls of the Aniene River, which has made this retreat near Rome famous since antiquity.

The unusual inscription and dating on the montage of this sheet by Bigatti appears on the montage of a second gouache by the artist from the same year1.
