Besides his own tireless studies of nature, Carl Jutz received a solid artistic education in Munich and in Düsseldorf. There, the “poultry painter” Gustav Süß encouraged him to devote himself to this theme as well; as a result, Jutz evolved with increasing success into an animal painter. In particular, his depictions of chicken yards or fighting cocks turned into true blockbusters. Yet Carl Jutz also continued to cherish intimate landscape paintings and drawings of other animal themes, as attested by this carefully executed sheet.

With a fully astonishing realism, Jutz presents this alertly resting animal, whose shining coat seems ready to touch.
