James Carl Hamtree, also known as Hamtree Harrington (1889-1956), was one of the preeminent coloured dancers and comedians of his time in the USA. Orlik must have met him personally during his only trip to the States in 1924 – likely in one of the many Varietés or shows on Broadway – since he portrays Hamtree in full makeup on this sheet. The Plantation may have been the title of the play, in which the actor appeared at the time.
