This view across Lake Lauerz towards the northeast face of Mt. Rigi at high summer captivates with its reduced colouration and detailed description of the landscape. Nevertheless, the watercolour was completed, according to Mayer’s annotation, in his Vienna studio, which must at the very least have required an exact preparatory study made on site. The artist viewed his subject from the shore of the lake not far from the parish of Schwyz, in the central Swiss canton of the same name, between Lake Zug and the even larger Lake Lucerne.
