After studies in Paris and a stay of three years in Italy until 1812, Joseph Augustus Knip attracted an ever growing number of collectors and patrons who particularly esteemed his large- format watercolours. Impressions from his Italian journey dominated his subject matter for many years, filtered through a slightly romantic point of view.
At the same time, a typically blue-green colouration with strikingly soft illumination characterises his often densely forested landscapes. The sheet shown here provides in many respects a worthy example of these characteristic traits of Knip’s watercolours.
