This watercolour, all the more impressive for the level of differentiation it achieves in monochrome, is a rare example of non-Saxon subject matter in Zingg’s later work. His teaching at the academy in Dresden, where he held a full professorship after 1783, as well as a larger number of commissions for graphic works, kept the diligent draughtsman for the most part busy at home.
On a journey through central Switzerland, Zingg nonetheless depicted the expanse of Lake Lucerne with a mighty mountain range in the background. His point of view must have been near the town of Weggis on the rear front of Mt. Rigi. Zingg allowed the viewer’s wide gaze to sweep across the peaceful lake with its two opposed promontories toward the Bouchershorn on the right and the sun-lit Niederbauen on the left.
