This view of the old Muiderpoort on the Baangracht in Amsterdam belongs to a series of works on paper, comparable in technique and measurements, that Verrijk made to depict the various fortifications of the city.

These fortifications had been reconstituted from 1660 to 1664 due to the greatly increased population of Amsterdam. The Muiderpoort, built in 1663, was one of the larger gatehouses of the city, but collapsed in upon itself in January 1769 and was replaced over the next two years by a building that still stands today.
