Jacob van der Ulft likely came to his very personal style of architectural landscape as an autodidact, but was also certainly influenced by the drawings of Jan de Bisschop (1628-1671). Despite the ostensibly Italianate atmosphere and themes of many of his drawings, it remains uncertain whether the artist himself ever undertook a journey past the Alps.1
