Durbourjal received his artistic training in Paris under the then-famous Louis Girodet-Trioson (1767-1824) and at the École des Beaux-Arts. From 1824 on, he regularly exhibited at the annual salons in his native city. Dubourjal became particularly known as a portraitist, mostly in watercolour and chalk drawings or in miniatures. One of his most famous clients was the American president James K. Polk in 1853.
