Beginning in 1824, Brandard studied under Edward Goodall in London, where he was particularly trained as a landscape painter and engraver. He would later perfect his watercolour technique, a particular advantage to him on his countless study trips. On one of these he made this view of the Isle of Thanet, looking toward the town of Broadstairs and Bleak House, where Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield. One year later, W. Floyd engraved the watercolour and published it with Simpkins & Marshall in London.
