After studying at the academy in his native Dresden, Carl Peschel travelled at the age of 27 to Rome, where he soon joined the circle of the Nazarenes and particularly cultivated the friendship of Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Ludwig Richter.

After returning to the Saxon capital, he first had to earn his living as a drawing teacher, before being hired at the academy in 1837. In 1846, he was finally honoured with a professorship at this institution, as well as admission to its academic council.
