Johann Metivier came from a Breton family of artists. He grew up in Paris, where he received training as an architect. In 1811, Metivier moved to Munich and successfully established himself as an architect and interior designer. Later, he was offered numerous public positions relating to the building industry in the Bavarian capital, in competition with other architects like Leo von Klenze (1784-1864).
