For Gabriele Münter, the 1930’s were a stationary period in Murnau after renewed travels, as well as a time of reflection on the expressionist traditions of the “Blauer Reiter.“

Her numerous landscape subjects were meant to have a “large and simple“ effect, with flowing contours and luminous areas of colour.

This watercolour of a railroad crossing at the edge of the Murnau bog, with its bare trees and traces of snow between the hiking trails, likely dates to February of 1934.
