Along with Harry Graf Kessler and Henry van de Velde, Ludwig von Hofmann assumed an influential position in the artistic life of Weimar after 1903. His home, always open to others, soon became an attraction in and of itself for kindred spirits from around the world. The American dancer Ruth St. Denis (1879-1968) also followed this call as soon as she began her solo career with a grand European tour in 1906. She sought out Hofmann in his atelier and sat for numerous pastels and drawings in Indian costumes from her program Rhada, Dance of the five senses.
