This partial view of his native city, embedded in the lush landscape of the foothills, is highly representative of Marzohl, who was known for such regional subject matter. Along with the detailed reproduction of the local garb worn by a woman walking in the foreground, Marzohl fills his picture with the emblems of Lucerne, such as the famous water tower and wooden chapel bridge, both dating from the fourteenth century and formerly elements of the city’s fortifications. Farther to the right, the viewer sees the pointed double spires of the court church.
