Appiani took part even during his training in the decoration of the royal palaces in Milan and Monza. Napoleon I later made him his first Italian court painter and gave him extensive commissions for frescoes and decorative paintings in his residences in Lombardy.
Throughout his life, Appiani strove as an artist to resurrect the classical ideals of stylistic purity. A second drawing of the same subject is preserved in the art collection of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan.
