Portrait of Christian D. Altvater
  • Franz Krüger
  • Großbadegast 1797 - 1857 Berlin
  • Portrait of Christian D. Altvater, ca. 1830
  • Black chalk, partly heightened with white,
    on light brown-coloured paper
  • 315 × 260 mm

Alongside his numerous pictures of horses and large-format parade views, it was above all Krüger’s portrait drawings that made him an unforgettable and nearly photographic chronicler of Prussian high society in the early nineteenth century – and a much sought-after artist.

He brought this technique of drawing in black and white on brown paper to such a level of perfection that it became the essence of the Biedermeier portrait in Prussia and attracted countless imitators.

Christian Daniel Altvater held the office of clerk at the Royal Prussian Court in Berlin. Krüger also portrayed Altvater’s mother-in-law, Johanna Illige, née Krahn.
