In 1834, Otto Speckter took over his father’s lithography studio and soon developed it into the leading workshop for book illustrations in northern Germany. At the same time, Speckter became famous for his more than 1,000 lithograph portraits.

This study served as the direct prototype for a printed portrait of J. B. Hamel, who was well-known in Hamburg as the author of religious tracts.
