The interior view of this impressive building was complicated by the artist, like a stage set – with lateral passageways, for instance, that guide the observer’s eye towards adjacent halls. The diversity of the architecture is further enhanced by the contrasting play of light. This sense of spatiality is reminiscent of the theatre prospects devised by Galli Bibiena’s brilliant artistic family during the early 18th century. In the foreground, a soldier guards the entrance to a dungeon in the ground with an open trap door and a retractable lantern.
