At the age of 18, Kuhnert won the drawing competition for a scholarship to the Berlin academy, thus laying the foundation for his successful career as an animal and landscape painter. Until the outbreak of the First World War, his extensive travels brought him several times to Africa, where the wild animals in their native settings particularly inspired him to countless studies.

He later translated these impressions into persuasively realistic paintings and drawings, e.g., for the fourth edition of Brehms Tierleben (1912 - 1916).
